Lately, I've been receiving e-mails from reps with mp3 attachments ; songs that they think I might be interested in, and I assume, would want to remark about here. I love that idea. I hope it prompts me do this type type typing think more more more more more more.

So I went to see Bright Eyes on Sunday. This is some of the most important music to me. To see the show was very special, and the fact that Conor and Co. really surprised me with some of the more obscure but personal favorite songs (We are Free Men, June on the West Coast [which I found cute, due to it being June, and me travelling to a concert on the west coast]...) was very pleasing. some not pleasing points of the trek were that my car's engine gave up on life completely, about 45 minutes into the four hour drive. After a VERY FUCKING EXPENSIVE TOW back to Kelowna, We made it just in time to catch a Greyhound. This would be a Greyhound that would get us to the show just in time. I've honestly never gone to so much trouble to do anything in my life. Well, anyway, I would say that the (slightly short; about 1:20:00 long) show was very much worth it for me. I even got a copy of the setlist (which i left in Van, but will hopefully have returned to me.)

It all started with the kinda-funny, kinda-cool, kinda-entertaining Gruff Rhys (pronounced Griff Reese) of Super Furry Animals fame. This one-man-show involved upside-down strung acoustic guitars, live vocal loops, toy tweeting birds, both English and Welsh languages, and little toy keyboards. So I was peeking around on Soulseek, trying to find some older Hawnay Troof (more an that later), when I stubbled upon a great surprise. A good quality copy of MSTRKRFT's "Paris" and (and!) their new remix, Polysics' "Ceolakanth Is Android" (be warned, it's sourced from their MySpace page, so the quality isn't super great)! This copy of Paris replaces my old one, a version ripped from an online radio show they did. So super stoked for the album!

Ahh, Hawnay Troof. Hawnay Troof is Vice Cooler (aka Chris Touchton from XBXRX) comin out of Oakland, California. This is hip-hop/crunk mixed with punk rock sneer, sprinkled with a bit of glitch, while being denied its A.D.D. drugs (think M.S.I., The Services). I love it.

Give Me Feist in 1994

I am a huge fan of PJ Harvey, and it's VERY blatant that in 1993, Leslie Feist (better known as simply Feist) was a huge fan as well. She was also likely obsessed with Sonic Youth. I can make this assumption based upon listening to 1994's "Don't Drink the Bathwater" by a band called Placebo. And, fuck no this is not the Placebo I'm talking about. I'm talking about an almost un-heard of Canadian rock group who recorded a 7-song EP (and I'm pretty sure nothing else) in 1994 (ironically, the same year that the Placebo of Britain formed. [note for m1k3: maybe 'women's fertility-related words' were 1994's "wolf" or "bird"]). This heavy rock group featured none other than Leslie Feist on vocals. I can't believe how blown away I am by this EP. I'm not blown away because the music is very good, I guess the big reason why I'm blown away is because of how fucking hot and rocking this 18-year-old version of Feist must've been!

Anyway. I'd just like you to listen to track one (album one) of PJ Harvey's Rid of Me, and then try track two (album one) of Placbeo's Don't Drink the Bathwater. It's amazing how much you will hear that screams "rip-off", both musically and lyrically.

I was drunk and the camera was on the wrong setting. Next time, I should be real good at this.

This is a shitty shot of Imaad Wasif, Yeah Yeah Yeahs' new touring guitarist. He opened the show his some of his own stuff. Good stuff, kinda somber though. Killed my buzz.

Blood On The Wall came on second. This was the highlight of the night (for me). At first appearance, the seemed like the roadies. Or truckdrivers. Certainly not the band. But they performed way better than I expected. I think I was the only one though. The crowd was bare, cause you can't drink 6 dollar beers in the seats; you got hang out in the lobby.

Leaving for Vancouver in a few hours. Got tickets for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs show at the Orpheum tonight (my deepest apologies Snoog). Just gotta make sure I bring everything I need (music, a book and some clean socks). But first, I must update my iPod.

Did you know that Radio 4 has a new album soon? Me neither. Gotham! (produced by DFA) their first, was a good album, with "Dance to the Underground" being one of the songs that greatly influenced my current taste. When Stealing Of A Nation came out, I had lost interest. Maybe it was the different production team, or because their political stance became much more apparent, but I never got into it. ANWAYS, here's a track off of Enemies Like This, released May 16th on Astralwerks (produced by Jagz Krooner). Word is, remixes for the album will be done by Hot Chip and Tim Goldsworthy (DFA)! Awesome Possum!
(I tried to find a standout track to post, but I just don't have the time. So I was just going to post the single, but then I read this:

It's about how corruption is so ingrained in our culture that it is pretty much expected and accepted as "normal." Couldn't have come at a better time. After literally months of playing Wolf Parade to death, and just barely beggining to tire of it, I finally have gotten around to checking out Sunset Rubdown. It's a side-project that i was leary to hear, because of the fear it would dissappoint. Thankfully, Spencer Krug (the standout voice in WP) and Co.'s music is anything but a letdown.
It all started for me with their self-titled EP, which i played 4 times over to myself last night, falling in love with it, escpecially this one, my new favorite fucking song:

(This post is culled from notes I wrote on the car ride home. All notes were written with my newly aquired pen, courtesy of the nice folks at the Century Plaza Hotel. Thanks Desk Clerk guy. May your wit charm the pants off of all those you chose.)

(The title is from a headline from The National Post I saw in a gas station. I didn't get a chance to read the article, but I assume it was either about the increasing loss of childhood innocence, or a disurbing new trend among pedophiles. I thought it was cute.)

Metric! Preceded by Islands! Started off by..um... I'm not too sure. Some recent Last Gang signings... not too bad, not too good. Kinda eastcoasty -ish. Whatev. (It was Panurge. - Ed.)

I am trying to put up some video I shot on YouTube, but it keeps fucking up. Maybe I'll try again. You want me to?

Islands were great. Especially when the recorders were pulled out (remember your first recorder? All pale yellow and hard plastic? Great.) Double especially when the recorder player sneaked up behind the security guard and rested his foot upon his head. The guard look ed 15 and probably felt 15. The new 12? Nerves... They were all dressed in white, head to toe. Except the really short guitarist, who must've forgot that it was White Day, as he still had his brown sneakers on. C'mon dude, go all the way. Fuck first date rules. It turns out I bought my shirt from the bass player. He was cool.

Emily was dressed as an Island: all in white. Shit, they put on a great show. Lots of flashes and splashes with little gashes (flashes of gashes? What colour is my panties?) Two mic stands, two synths; lots of keys. No locks. Everyone jumped and jived and pushed and pulled. Cute? Until I'm annoyed. This one chick on my left screamed and moaned to every lyric. EVERY lyric.... screamed into my ear. Surprised to hear; I kinda have a hard time making out any of Metrics' lyrics. Besides the chorus, which I still usually get wrong. Pay attention!

We didn't stay for the encore because I thought I was the cleverest person in the room. Coat check! I'll be first! Or still last....
Speaking of coat checking, would you check with another? Someone you didn't know? Cause who would carry the ticket? I spoke out loud to myself about the $3.00 price for checking, when a girl overheard. "You wanna check together?" No. No, I do not. So she called me an asshole. ASSHOLE!?! ME? Never. Maybe they do things differently in Vancouver....

All in all, it was a great show. I like great shows.

Funny, this album is reviewed on just about every shitty "met-tal" (think Olaf from Clerks) site.
Never with an encouraging word, which figures for metallic homophobes. What happened when Halford came out? ANYWAYS, I guess this is metal. He has the Cookie Monster-ish vocals and the pummeling double kick drum which is associated with just about every heavy metal band out there. But that's about it. No shredding guitar solos. Or guitars at all. Or even real drums. And they (Kneepad Nikki and P. Nizlicka) sing about cock sucking, ass fucking, and face cumming. Outstanding!

Can you possibly do a good cover of a Nine Inch Nails song? Sure, Johnny Cash did it. And a fantastic job he did. Even Trent admits Cash's version is better than his own. When I sing along though, I forget about the 'crown of thorns' bit and get my shit fucked up. Then rewind.

There's thousands of compilations out there with shitty bedroom depressives mimicing their favorite NIN songs, all doing really bad jobs. Not that these are much better:

Check out You Aint No Picasso for a few Talking Heads tracks, including my 2nd all-time fav, "And She Was" (my first being a secret). Funny, I spent the better of the day at work listening to "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads". Live albums scare me, but this one is beautiful. 2 discs capturing their best, from two different eras.

Oh, fuck. The O.C. steals another one. Tom Vek will appear on an upcoming episode. Is my cool now your cool? Is it still my cool? I have yet to watch a single episode of The O.C. If I did, would it cure my depression?

You Took a White Orchid and Turned it Bleu

     Seeing as how Michel Gondry is one of my favorite directors, I found this to be pretty cool. It's a new limited White Stripes 12". Two side A's; one Blue Orchid remix by Michel, and one by Jim Jarmusch. I tried to find these tracks but to no avail.
    I think it's worth the post just to see their rendition of the album cover.

    Ultimatley, one of my favorite albums of last year was the obscure release, "Close Enough" by the Swedish trio The Tiny. After almost forgetting about them completely they popped into my head today.
    So I checked their website and discovered that they released a new EP last month, and have a full length due this month. They make impossibly cute music with nothing more than vocals, keys (piano, harmonium..), cello and upright bass.
    Please check out this video for a new song called "They Say It's Weird". I promise it'll make your heart smile.

Be on the lookout for a new NIN EP April 4th, when Everyday Is Exactly The Same is released. Nothing unrealsed before, besides the Interpol thing, but you can now have the EL-P and the Richard X Only remixes on an official halo.

Oh wow. This is the best news I've had all week. If you search hard enough, you can find an unmastered, just-finished-recording copy of Tv On The Radios' new still untitled album on the in'ernet. I have been in wild anticipation of new material ever since the tease of The New Health Rock single. Once, I took a solo bus ride from Vancouver, and was kept warm by deseperate youth and bloodthirsty babes. I fell asleep and dreamt videos for them all. The most vivid and surreal music videos ever. And only for me.

Ahhh, Bakelite. They played here once awhile ago, opening for Bend Sinister and Channels 3+4. It was great; I bought an "official tour merch" shirt (which was really a Salvation Army find with a jiffy markered logo) for only 5 bucks. Danced (spazzed?) forever. I was ssssooooo dddrrrrrrunk. I miss being that drunk. And dancing(spazzing?). I wanna do both now. Right the fuck now.

ANYWAYS, Bakelite have a new EP coming out (came out?) soon. And they're opening for Gogogo Airheart in Australia/New Zealand this spring. Fuck yeah.

You have got to hear Two Gallants. It's one of the bands i'm most excited about for 2006. They sound like violent blues/roots that could've been made 100 years ago (on an electric guitar).
